Traffic accident causes local TV outage in Kapalua

By Associated Press

Kapalua LPGA ClassicKAPALUA, Hawaii – AA traffic accident Friday caused a cable television outage affecting most of West Maui for hours, including the site of the Kapalua LPGA Classic.

The outage during the second round of the tournament did not affect the Golf Channel, which uses a satellite to telecast the event.

However, all the TVs in the Ritz-Carlton hotel, including at the tournament’s media center, were left without reception for hours. The leaderboard computers in the media center were also down, but officials said the glitch was unrelated to the cable outage.

Rick Colletto, Oceanic Time Warner Cable’s general manager for Maui County, said the company’s main fiber optic trunk from Kihei to Lahaina was severed over Honoapiilani Highway about 10 a.m.

He said the outage also affected customers on the islands of Molokai and Lanai and that repair crews hoped to have service restored after 4 p.m.
