Thompson follows double-eagle with hole-in-one

By Associated Press

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Nicholas Thompson gained five shots in quick fashion with a double-eagle and a hole-in-one to storm into contention at the Frys.com Open.

Thompson, using a 3-wood, sank his shot from 261 yards on the par-5, 562-yard 11th hole on the Raptor Course at the Grayhawk Golf Club.

After a par on No. 12, Thompson's tee shot with a 7-iron went in on the par-3, 199-yard 13th. In three holes, he moved from 6 under to 11 under par.

It was the fourth double-eagle on the PGA Tour this year.

There were two other holes-in-one under ideal conditions in Saturday's third round, both on the par-3, 198-yard 16th. The first, by Ted Purdy with a 5-iron, won him a new Mercedes, which he kissed after making the shot. Chad Campbell later hit one on the same hole, using a 6-iron.

“Even if "conditions are perfect" and it's "golf in a dome", that's golfing your ball!!! Same with those 61's of Matteson's...My guess is on the inside Chamblee is thinking, "Man I'm glad I've got a steady job....."”
