Fantasy Island: St. Jude Classic

A pair of the biggest stars in golf – and certainly two of the more popular players on the PGA Tour in Phil Mickelson and John Daly – return to the golf landscape this week. And appropriately, the cultured and eclectic host city of the St. Jude Classic – Memphis, TN – has definitely seen it's share of larger-than-life figures. Unfortunately, our fantasy guru Rex Hoggard – whose own popularity among the masses, is, well, still questionable – oddly chose this week to skip town and recharge his batteries on his own fantasy island. In fact, Monday morning, all he left us was a post-it note that said, "No column this week, gone to the beach. Good luck."

So, you'll have to simply rely on the illustrious GolfChannel.com staff's picks to guide you this week.

Note: A player can be picked a maximum of five times. We will be keeping a running tally of the monies earned each week. The participants include: Jay Coffin, Editorial Director; Mercer Baggs, Editorial Manager; Brian Koressel, Senior Producer; Dena Davis, Assistant Editor; Erik Peterson, Travel Editor; Jerry Foltz, special contributor.

STAFF PICKS:

NamePlayer PickReasonMoney
Rex HoggardBrandt SnedekerHe's been sidelined since Augusta National with a rib injury, but was sharp last week during practice and may be the freshest player in the field since he didn't play 36-hole U.S. Open qualifying.$2,475,252
Jay CoffinScott VerplankLooking back at Rex's picks, it looks like he’s off every week. Verplank has tied for eighth here the last two years and is as steady as they come.$4,338,652
Mercer BaggsDavid TomsAfter taking Tiger last week, I'm driving the Toms train to Memphis.$4,699,661
Erik PetersonWoody Austin Tough to bet against the Mickelson family, but Woody has that party-crashing way about him. He'll hang around all week, and if his putter heats up he'll be tough to beat. $3,621,452
Brian KoresselJeff OvertonThis is the third time this year I’m going with my fellow Southern Indiana native. And as they say, the third time is a always a charm.$4,646,625
Dena DavisDavid TomsMove over, Mercer Baggs, I'm catching that same Toms train. Why wouldn't I? The former St. Jude champion who's leading the Tour in driving accuracy loves the TPC Southwind track. Choo Choo.$2,972,572
Jerry FoltzMathias GronbergIt's a longshot but 10 birdies and an eagle on a bogey-free 36-hole Sunday on the Nationwide Tour convinced me he's good enough to win anywhere. Speaking of anywhere, where's Rex? This must be his sixth vacation this year. He must double as a travel agent.$2,749,813
