Fantasy Island: CA Championship

By GolfChannel.com Team

The PGA Tour moves from Palm Beach Gardens to Doral for the WGC-CA Championship.

Each week, our GolfChannel.com staff will offer up their winning selections. The team includes senior writers Rex Hoggard and Randall Mell; Golf Channel annalyst Charlie Rymer; on-course reporter Jerry Foltz; editorial director Jay Coffin; editorial manager Mercer Baggs; senior producer Brian Koressel; travel editor Erik Peterson, and instruction associate editor Richard Currey.

WGC-CA Championship and Puerto Rico Open

Rex Hoggard

Rex Hoggard
Winnings:
$1,785,071
WGC-CA:
Paul Casey

Puerto Rico:
Joe Durant

No one has been more consistent than the Englishman this season and as his tie for fourth at last week’s Honda Classic demonstrates his game travels well.

Durant is one of the circuit’s best ballstrikers, has been showing signs of life (runner-up in Mexico last month), and played solid last year in Puerto Rico (T-9).

Randall Mell

Randall Mell
Winnings:
$1,695,730
WGC-CA:
Camilo Villegas

Puerto Rico:
Alex Prugh

Camilo's biceps are big enough to carry his game yet another week without fatigue. Villegas is hot, and he's headed to Miami, a place he loves almost as much as the folks there love him.

Prugh is knocking hard on a door that finally opens this week.

Charlie Rymer

Charlie Rymer
Winnings: $715,201
WGC-CA:
Camilo Villegas

Puerto Rico:
Brett Quigley

I don’t see anyone hanging with Villegas at Doral, at least not the way he is playing right now. He loves the bermuda grass and has played well at Doral, finishing T-5 last year.

As for Puerto Rico I’m going with Quigley. He finished second there last year and let’s face it, he is due.

Jerry Foltz

Jerry Foltz
Winnings:
$1,816,535
WGC-CA:
Camilo Villegas

Puerto Rico:
Bryce Molder

Gotta go with the hot hand. Villegas played well here last year and is arguably playing the best golf of his career right now.

Molder's played better than the previous week for five straight now with a T-8 in Phoenix in his last event.

Jay Coffin

Jay Coffin
Winnings: $434,937
WGC-CA:
Sergio Garcia

Puerto Rico:
Alex Prugh

As usual it all comes down to the flatstick for El Nino, but he has good vibes at Doral and has finished in the top-15 eight times there.

Prugh hasn’t missed a cut this year in six events and he has three top-10s, the best stats of anyone else in the field.

Mercer Baggs

Mercer Baggs
Winnings:
$2,856,596
WGC-CA:
Anthony Kim

Puerto Rico:
Joe Durant

Kim doesn't have much of a history at Doral but he's playing increasingly better each week. He needs to put four good rounds together and not just three, which is what he's been doing this year.

In its two-year history, the Puerto Rico Open has rewarded Tour veterans with winless droughts. Durant fits that bill.

Brian Koressel

Brian Koressel
Winnings: $579,093
WGC-CA:
Paul Casey

Puerto Rico:
Kevin Stadler

The Englishman is playing well, confidence is running high and he's due for a breakout win of sorts.

This formula might sound simplistic, but trust me: I like the big guy in smaller events.

Erik Peterson

Erik Peterson
Winnings:
$1,604,895
WGC-CA:
Alvaro Quiros

Puerto Rico:
Steve Elkington

Doral favors the player who hits it really long and somewhat straight. Quiros fits that bill, and he’s primed for a win on American soil.

Call it a hunch, but Elk has played well so far this season. Plus, he’s a steady pro so it’s a safe bet.

Richard Currey

Richard Currey
Winnings:
$1,484,208
WGC-CA:
Geoff Ogilvy

Puerto Rico:
Michael Bradley

This past week I missed my first cut of the year and this week I am looking to come back strong with a previous winner in Ogilvy. He hasn’t missed a cut this season and has two top-10s in three appearances here.

Last time I went with a repeat winner I ended up getting the victory so I am going with it again this week. Bradley has only missed the cut once this season.
