Nick Watney and John Merrick will team up to attempt to end the United States’ eight-year title drought at the Mission Hills World Cup in November sources have told GolfChannel.com.

Watney, who is 37th in the World Ranking, was the highest-ranked American to accept the invitation into the 28-team event that will be played Nov. 26-29 at Mission Hills Golf Club’s Olazabal Course in Dongguan, China.

Watney was allowed to pick his partner as long as that player was ranked within the top 100 in the world rankings on Aug. 17. Merrick jumped 12 spots in the ranking to No. 100 thanks to his tie for 10th at the PGA Championship, his second top-10 this season at a major. An official announcement is expected on Aug. 28.

Tiger Woods and David Duval were the last Americans to win the World Cup in 2000 in Argentina.

“WOW..if we all learned Chinese prior to the event,we could let Letterman do a top 10 for us. I for one could hardly wait for it to happen.Ping, there are getting to be so much of this meaningless play, no body wants to interupt their hunting/fishing schedules, Hey RJ, I can see your a Breed fan. I wonder if they could do a voice over for him. That may make the show easier to swallow..Lets not make fun of Nick, he just wants to play, never mind what cup/reason..Are any of the internet stations carring this? Lets see, with the time delay, should be on about 2 in the morning,so you can bet I will be sitting waiting with bated breath..yea,right...STUB,CEO 1st tier poster ”

“ Strange how they all want to play in the Presidents Cup-- is it because they usually win?”

“Not to worry about USA being represented by # 37 and #100 in the World Cup. All they need is a few practice sessions with the GC studio clown, Michael Breed. He should be able to whip them into shape in no time. All they have to learn is how to hit balls off a golf mat into a studio screen. By the way, does Breed even have a world golf ranking above 10.000 or so?”

“Got me on that one flashy100, I can only wonder how a tournament like this that once had world class status has come to where it is now.... Is it the location? The prize money? The time of the year? What? ”

“Actually there are only 14 Americans ahead of him in the World Ranking-but your point is valid.”
