9Norman says Tiger has responsibilities as a public figure

NAPLES, Fla. – Tiger Woods has the right to privacy, but he also has responsibilities as a public figure, Greg Norman told Golf Channel’s Inga Hammond in an interview that will air tonight on Golf Central at 6 p.m. with a replay at 11:30 p.m.

“I hope Tiger sorts these issues out,” Norman said. “Things like that should stay behind closed doors, but then again we are public figures. There are times when people feel like they can reach through the TV screen and say `I own you, I know you because I buy a product you represent.’ That’s a part of it. You have to accept that responsibility.”

Norman is host to the Shark Shootout, which begins Friday at Tiburon Golf Club at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Resort.

Woods apologized for “transgressions” in a statement on his Web Site last week after Us Weekly and the National Enquirer published stories alleging extramarital affairs.

Norman dealt with supermarket tabloid scrutiny after he split from his wife of 26 years, Laura Andrassy, to marry tennis great Chris Evert and again when Norman and Evert announced in October that they were separating after 15 months of marriage. The separation with Evert was announced days before Norman’s arrival as the International captain at the Presidents Cup at Harding Park in San Francisco. Norman announced at Harding Park that focus should be on the matches and he would not answer questions about the separation.

“Unfortunately, the media are the media,” Norman told Hammond. “They support you on the way up. And when you need them, we use you just as much as you use us. And when you step across the line, you’ve got to kind of take a little bit of the wrath of God, or whatever you want to call it.”

Norman said he hopes Woods sorts out matters with his wife, but he also said nobody’s bigger than the game.

“You don’t want to see any residual fallout into the game,” Norman said.

In the Shark Shootout media room before the interview with Hammond, Norman was asked how he thought the business of the game might be affected by Woods’ troubles.

“There’s obviously some damage control that will have to be put in position and into place,” Norman said. “There’s no question about that. He is the leader of the pack.

“He does represent the PGA Tour. He does represent golf in a lot of ways, so there will be an impact. I really can’t comment on that, but I’m sure there are people thinking about it, reacting about it, making assumptions. And what’s it going to be like when he comes out and plays again? Or is he going to come out and play again? There’s all these speculations out there, and quite honestly, what is really the truth? Nobody is going to know that until we really know.”

“Sorry, Greg Norman of all people should be keeping his mouth shut. Rumors swirled about him for years. It was at his property that then President Clinton had a mysteriously "tripping accident" in the wee hours of the a.m. that broke his ankle. Norman cheated on his wife with a woman he knew was married, and married to his FRIEND. Instead of amicably parting with his wife and generously sharing their largesse -- for she worked just as hard to make a home and raise his children -- he fought her tooth and nail over every dime. Then he marries and now dumps his former paramour after 15 months. And he's going to talk about "responsibility?" Pot meet Kettle. Kettle's real name is Greg Norman.”

“First of all I would like to say that I am no fan of Tiger's. That said this whole thing is his problem and is between him and his family. I doubt that there is anyone out there who would realistically NOT change places with him. He has all the FU money he needs to just go away so he does not need his golf career. Now as far as his actions all I can say is that this was normal behavior 10-15 years ago. I used to attend PGA tournaments (they were not the only ones) and there would be hookers and girlfriends, groupies and all kinds of people hanging around trying to hook up. It is only since Tiger came on the scene that people began to take notice and the hangers on went into the woods work (pardon the pun) For any Golfer over the age of 40 to come out and say it is wrong for Tiger to be behaving this way is either blind or a hypocrite. Again what he does he has to answer to his family. I am so jealous of him right now because he has the game, money and now all the women. What more do you ever need. ”

“Here's a guy who should talk, he left his wife for a dog bone eating tennis player who had looks that could stop time and now he is giving his opinion about Tiger Woods. After Greggie found out that Chrissy wasn't for him he started sniffing around. He took back his diamond studed dog collar from Chrissy and sent her packing. I wounder if Greggie called Tiger to let him know that Chrissy was available. Hey Greg people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. ”

“Mell. You missed the biggest negative. Norman was cheating with Chris Evert behind the back of his best friend Andy Mills, Chris Husband. Thats far worse than what TW did. What does that say about Norman's morals. Leaves his wife and stabs his best friend. TW is a saint compared to that. That goes far beyond the morality of cheating on a spouse. That is demonic. Why would Norman even agree to an interview when he did worse than TW.”

“ When you have money and your famous everyone wants to be your friend. Imagine how much more energy Tiger Woods will have playing golf when he is not servicing all those woman! Mentally & Physically! Gatorade drops Tiger but it's drink didn't make Tiger Woods into the golfer that he is today! ”
