19Mickelson makes warmer impression than Woods

“Affable vs. Cold-blooded.”

That was the headline in Shanghai’s Oriental Morning Post Sunday before Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods squared off in the final group of the final round of the WGC-HSBC Champions event.

The story focused on Mickelson's fan-friendly approach vs. the more serious demeanor of Woods.

Dan Washburn, a Shanghai-based writer working for ESPN.com, relayed the local accounts in his story.

“Mickelson without a doubt has charmed China or at least the part of China that cares about golf,” Washburn wrote.

This is how Shanghai’s Oriental Morning Post characterized the impression Mickelson made on the country as compared to Woods:

“Without a doubt Mickelson is the most approachable star at Sheshan. When he hits a good shot he rewards fans' applause by smiling or tipping his cap. When he goes through the crowd, if you put out your hand he'll even give a 'high-five.' Some people say he learned his sweet smile from his wife, who used to be a cheerleader …

"Woods can be 'cold-blooded.' Don't expect to get his autograph after following him for 18 holes. Don't even expect him to look at you, no matter if you're only 1 inch away. Head down, face serious, he might communicate with his caddie a little bit, otherwise he'll hastily eat a snack. His focus is only on the little white ball and the hole in the distance. He is too obsessed with golf."

It should be noted that media reported that Woods dealt with considerable distraction all week with cameras whirring before and after shots.

The Nanfang Daily, one of the largest newspapers in Southern China's Guangdong Province, headlined a story this way: "Mickelson: Rank second, approachability first."

Washburn wrote that the newspaper described Woods' demeanor at his Wednesday press conference as "grave," and said his face was "overclouded." Mickelson, however, was described as "smiling," "honest" and "sincere."

Washburn's analysis included this: "In some of these instances Mickelson can come off as plastic or overly scripted at early week press conferences it often feels as though he is reciting a memorized book report but he hits all the right notes, and it translates well. Sometimes at press conferences he'll say 'xie xie,' [which is] 'thank you' in Mandarin, a small gesture that goes a long way with the Chinese reporters."

“This is an all time low, comparing personalities of golfers. Why not compare the customs of folks in England or Scotland to folks from Shanghai. They are completely different but that doesn't make one culture better or worse than the other. Woods and Michelson are entirely different people. Their environment, cultural backgrounds and yes... even their methods of playing golf are different. It sounds like the writer and others want to change Woods to be the individual they think he should be instead of who he is. Golfers aren't meant to be buddies with journalists. There are a lot of celebs who don't sign autographs or smile when on camera. I can only imagine what it would have been like if Woods would have started signing a few autographs, it would have been like a feeding frenzy. Did you see that huge crowds of people following Woods in Shanghai, maybe a bit scary. Let's just stick to golf. Remember the old Avis car rental commercial, "we're number two we try harder". I'm not saying the Mr. Michelson is plastic but when you are number two and getting older being popular can be pretty gratifying because according to other successful golfers, Woods hasn't reached his peak yet.”

“3irons - You can now say you have officially heard a rumor of Phil stiffing a bet becauser I said it at 7:45 am. I know of many instances where Phil conveniently forgot to pay his losses....one of them being to me. Everytime I see him and remind him of it he just gets that shit eating grin and laughs. Personally I could use the $2,400.”

“3irons, I'm not sure if you are a wing-nut or Phil’s wing-man... Your writing indicates you were on a feverish rant today. Is that what this is all about? You have some local knowledge of Phil and Butch and now you fell compelled to carry their water? I thought the profession they were in was playing golf not locker chats and how Butch Harmon earned his keep while working for Tiger. You call Tiger a notorious tight ass but the majority of fans say he kicks ass! My post stands! ”

“alimumbo,...FYI,...Phil has 3 foundations but doesn't go around tooting his own horn. The media promotes Woods' foundation at every opportunity. So what ! Dozens, perhaps hundreds of professionals have set up foundations, but you fools think only Woods could have come up with the idea. Gimme a break, which by the way, they ALL recieve for there philanthropy. Woods is a notorious tight ass, and on several occassions Harmon took care of locker room attendents, etc. Most notably at Riviera. Woods also took back a $20 tip because his wife reminded him that he tipped the valet when they arrived. The kid working as the valet, was an aspiring player that I worked with. Now,...as for Phil gambling......you are absolutely correct. But he takes care of his priorities first. He's never stiffed me on a bet, nor anyone that I wager with, and I do this all over the world. Never, ever have I heard anybody speak of him welchin' a bet. Not even a rumor . I've gotten in his wallet a few times on sports bets, but he usually takes it back out on the course. Woods and Phil are polar opposites, as the people in China found out. Woods should win the Nation Wide caliber event in Australia easily. He's already got 3 million reasons to smile this week. That's what I'd call a sure thing. Poor fellow needs the money after getting hammered on his Dubai projects. Now,....who's gonna be the brave soul to discretly delete this post. Some Woods suck-up no doubt ! The truth about your boy stings, doesn't it ?.............Z.”

“TTech....Good to hear from you. Your view as a player is probably much different than mine as a fan. I know Phil is hated by some of the tour pros, but I don't really care what happens in a place I can't get in to. What I see is a guy who really cares about the fans and shows it weekly. I also see the response of the fans. My opinion comes from the tounaments I go to and of course what I see on TV. I was a Augusta this year on a cold Tuesday with 30 thousand other fans. Phil came out and played a practice round and Tiger was a no show. The fans were torked and many were openly critical of Tiger. As for his gambling issues, that is between him and those who have a problem with him. Just my perspective as a fan.”

“Hogan Tempo - You need to get out more...apparently a little sheltered. All this glowing praise for Phil might get a few raised eyebrows from people he has stiffed on bets. Leaving a generous tip of couple hundred doesn't quite make up for stiffing someone couple hundred thousand.”

“Is this topic meant to be a joke? Seriously kids... These comparisons really need to end. What are we going to be comparing next, Phil's $200k gambling day at Augusta versus Tiger's giving back with his foundation? Perhaps Phil betting on someone other than himself to win the British Open versus Tiger's learning center in Cypress, CA? Perhaps, Phil’s tipping waiters versus no complaints regarding Tiger and his wife eating out on the town. Really, are these comparisons about these two men or perhaps the inadequacies of the writers trying to elevate Phil and demean Tiger? How about just sticking to comparing them on the golf course…”

“macer....a high five in 2008 and a half smile nod to a fan in 2003.....wow what a guy!!!!! There is absolutely no comparison when it comes to fan interaction. Phil is #1 and Tiger is....well, lets just say he will be going to fan Q-school for 2010. There's more to being the greatest than winning. Congrats to Phil for a great win and another "fans first" example for those ranked ahead of him in the world rankings.....go figure.”

“stub, I may not be around to witness Tiger's exit from competitive golf nor how sportswriters will portray Tiger's career. I have witnessed the softening of the public and press for Ben Hogan after his accident and the acceptance of Muhammad Ali midway and following his great career. It is my belief that Tiger will be accepted and respected by most of the golf public after retirement even if he never wins another major. Macer”

Tiger does give high fives periodically as he did to a five year old on the first day of the 2008 Buick Tournament at Torrey Pines. The world's number one in any sport has little or no room for error and is under scrutiny 24-7. Macer”

“Personally I think it's silly to make nice guy comparisons between MIckelson and Woods, with one the loser and one the winner. Mickelson has had a life changing event with his wife's cancer and those kinds of events make people more vulnerable and approachable, both of which translate into fan connections. Not a knock, just a fact. Woods contends with more public demands than Mickelson will ever have and that promotes added security both of the noticeable bodyguard type and of the mind. Neither of those are fan friendly. So if you want your heroes to win all the time and make the most astounding shots under the most intense pressure, it's not reasonable to expect them to be Sesame Street characters. That's Woods; guarded and incomparable. No one thinks his Foundation is anything but a sincere attempt to change the lives of many young people often headed in the wrong direction. Both of these men have done admirably in their public and personal lives but when you have your favorites it's not necessary to stomp on others. They're both winners.”

“HT,...Mickelson does indeed represnt his craft with dignity and honor. The man's acts of generosity are legend here in Arizona. I have had the good fortune to play with a few Tour players here at WR, and Phil comes across as a "genuine human being". This was my grandmothers impression after meeting Phil and is high praise indeed. She is Navajo and the phrase is ancestral. He deserves his accolades from what I have seen. What you see, is most definitely what you get, and that is rare for Tour professionals..........................z.”

“It's funny, but I have never heard anything derogatory about Phil Mickelson as a person. He is always very gracious and polite in his dealings with the galleries, etc. He is also very generous with his time and his money (just ask some of the waiters and waitresses who have served his party at dinner, or locker room / clubhouse personnel) and I understand that you almost have to fistfight him to pick up a dinner check! He sure has my vote!”
