2Lee bounced out of Q-School

Danny Lee’s first PGA Tour Q-School run ended badly.

Lee, 19, the 2008 U.S. Amateur champ and youngest winner of a European Tour event, failed to make it through the first-stage qualifier Friday at Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney, Texas . Lee’s 4-over-par 76 left him tied for 36th. With bad weather affecting play, Lee shot a 78 in the second round. He needed to finish among the top 22 to advance to the second stage. By virtue of winning the Johnnie Walker Classic earlier this season, Lee is exempt on the European Tour through 2011. He could play in PGA Tour events as a non-member through sponsor exemptions and by meeting other qualifying criteria into majors and World Golf Championship events.

Miami’s Erik Compton, 29, is thriving in his Q-School bid a year after his second heart transplant. Compton shot 65 Friday and leads the qualifier at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., with one round to go. Gary Nicklaus, 40, son to Jack Nicklaus, slipped down onto the bubble in a tie for 22nd with a 74. Sam Saunders, grandson to Arnold Palmer, also shot 74 and slipped into a tie for 35th.

Hawaii’s Tadd Fujikawa, 18, took a step backwards Friday with a 74 and tumbled down into a tie for 22nd at St. John’s Golf & Country Club in St. Augustine, Fla. The top 22 after Saturday’s final round advance to second stage. Jay Haas Jr. is in good shape tied for 11th with Jon McLean, son of noted swing instructor Jim McLean, tied for 15th.
