The Haney Project: Meltdown in Atlanta

The day at Celebrity Golf Club in Atlanta started out well as Charles Barkley was reunited with former teammate and fellow basketball hall of famer Julius Erving. But when the pair hit the golf course with Hank Haney, everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. Tune in Monday nights at 10 p.m. ET only on Golf Channel.

“I'm a golf nut and am currently working through my set of problems. I don't pretend to be an expert but I can't help but try to solve this puzzle. I made what I think might be an important observation of Charles' swing. Everyone notices the head dip but I haven't heard anything about Charles' tendency to stand up on his takeaway. Charles' best swings seem to have less dip but also less upward movement on the takeaway. I wonder if this habit of standing up on the takeaway only encourages the dip on the downswing. I also wonder what it does to his plane. I suspect he would be less across the line and perhaps a bit laid off like Hank likes if he could swing around a consistent spine angle.”

“Charles you said you believe the reason for your problems on the course is because you don't know what's going to happen or you are unsure of the result after you swing... well son NOBODY KNOWS what's going to happen... NOBODY. You just do what you know you can do and hope for the best just like everything else you do.You know what I think. I think there is something about you the game doesn't like, golf is like that, yeah, it may sound crazy but it's true.By the way, have you reconciled with your father yet.”

“Hank, I suffered for a long time with a bad "chicken wing" and a lot of fat shots... I took many lessons with a great teacher... I still had the same issues. Finally, I narrowed my swing to 3 thoughts, keep my left knee quite and level, keep my arms extended, and stick the finish... It set off a chain reaction for a nice controlled swing. Good setup and grip of course set it all off... ”
