Warren Bottke and Gary Carter

I'm here on the range with MLB Hall of Fame member Gary Carter and we'd like to show you a quick drill to keep your right elbow from flying away from your body when you swing. I'm sure many of you have seen Vijay Singh warming up on the practice range with a headcover underneath his arm. It's a great way to maintain the width in your backswing and keep the club on plane.

Put headcover under right elbow
Setup with headcover under right elbow

Gary's tendency is to let his right elbow fly when he swings, so we're going to put a headcover underneath his right armpit to stop that from happening.

Swing back with headcover under right elbow
As he takes the club back, I want to make sure that he maintains the width of his forearms with a 90 degree shoulder turn. I also want to see that his elbows stay down and that he can set the club at the top of his swing to an effective backswing lever.

Swing thru with headcover under right elbow
For those of you that are struggling with a "flying right elbow" condition, take the headcover off your 3-wood and tuck it under your right armpit.

Finish with headcover under right elbow
Make some swings trying to keep your right elbow close to your side so the headcover doesn't fall to the ground.

“Haven't tried it yet, too cold, but the advice is very sound re: the flying elbow”
