Chipping Club Selection

Chipping Club Selection

Free Turn

Golf Channel

This weeks free turn is on club selection for your chip shots. Most players use one club to hit to flags of varying distances. What we really want to see is you use different clubs with the same swing technique. So if I am very close to the green and the flag is close to me, I am going to use my pitching wedge. As the flag gets further away, I am going to use a less lofted club such as a 7 or 6 iron. The basic chipping technique would be hands down on the grip, feet close together, and the ball in between your feet. Keeping the swing small and controlled, make a smooth stroke at the ball. Now as we need to chip to a flag that is farther away we will do the same swing as before but this time with a less lofted club. I use my 6 iron but a 7 or even 8 can be used depending on the player’s preference. So take your stance with feet close together, ball between your feet, and hands low on the grip. This time the ball will roll out more to the longer flag. When you have more green to work with this is a method that makes it easier to chip it close. Hope this tip helps you out.

“What's worked for me? Only open your stance a bit if you are uphill. Also, if you are with in 5 feet or so of the green or closer and are going to use a 7 or 8 iron (great shot choice in my opinion), hit it just like a putt. It makes controlling the distance a lot easier.”

“No mention was made on opening your stance which appears to be the case in the Lesson. I hope you do another Lesson on using just wedges: pitch, gap, sand and lob. ”
