Hi Double D and Moose,

I was wondering if you can give me some insight on how to get on the Big Break.

It seems that you need a big break to get on the Big Break.
I have been away form golf for a few years. I started playing again about 1 and ½ years ago to get my game back into shape.(back down to about a 1) I decided to take a shot at getting to play on the Nationwide or PGA tour now that my kids are a bit older. I feel like I am almost ready. And I would like to have a shot on the Big break.

As you know the mini tours are expensive for Monday qualifying and the tournament price as well (over $1,000 plus lodging). And without a sponsor it is hard to play and keep your other job. And Q school is what now over $6,000.

I was even thinking of doing a $100 dollar shoot out. Here in long island New York. (strait up $100 around) to make money go into some Monday qualifiers.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I can send you my e-mail address if you have any ideas.

Thank you for your time

Steve

DD, Moose, whoever.. I have a real question that applies to all the big breakers. Why is putting such a weak area? Is it because the greens are not that good at the time you get to use the courses? When I go to PGA or LPGA events and watch the people on the putting green, they all look fantastic, just pouring them in.

when watching the girls in real play, most would not read enough break. the guys seems to be better.

but when I watch the big break, I see reads that are not even close and usually short.

I found that the PGA tour stats show the main diff between tiger and the rest is the number of putts taken.

any of you guys work with short game guys like pelz, utley, ???

Then instead of a Public Link event, may a mini-tour event like the Tar Heel Tour or something close to that.

Nobody is saying that it isnt tuff to make it in golf. It is just as hard to be a Pro football, Baseball, Tennis, Basketball player. The point is most of the winners and losers just are not Pro calibre. The ones that have tried to play have missed 99% of the cuts. DD you and kip are now caddies. Where is Justin? Dani? Yes Tommy made it through Q-school. He has yet to make it to the 3rd round and the weekend. I am sure he will and I believe will have a great year.

You should not underestimate those on here. We have a great knowledge of the game. We have watched and we can see how you are all doing. It has not been very good. dont blame us, you are the ones with the clubs in you hands.

Hi Swinn,
I get this question a lot and have posted on here before. Here's the basics. You have to be good (very good now), be yourself (they spot phonies easily), and be able to execute at an audition. It helps to be polite. In the end though, the producers are going to pick whomever is going to put together to make the best programming, and they do a great job season after season providing a mix of talent, entertainment, and drama. It isn't easy picking people for these shows, and there are thousands that apply and only about 10 or so picked, so it does take some luck. My advice is apply, and hope. Barring that, practice, enter local events that cost little, win your sections, play in the Open Qualifiers, and save up for Q School. Good Luck!! Moose

I think there are a variety of answers to your question and you you answered a few of them about putting. Most Big Break shows are filmed at courses in off season, and the greens are not in the best shape, so the players don't get to see greens that roll great and that they are used to seeing. Without a ton of time to practice... this doesn't always work out. An exception was Season 1, where at Tree Tops we had greens in season that were nice... and I made almost everything I looked at. Season 7, I wasn't playing too much and scraggy bermuda was a mystery. Thats just me though. Other players adapt well. Dave Gunas can putt in a war zone, and so can Kelly Murray. Some players do use short game coaches, but at this level... most use an overall coach. For example, Justin Peters was (is?) a student of Bob Toski, and is a fine putter. The last thing I think you have to consider is that on TBB all of these putts are big pressure putts, and the CHOKE is on a lot, a lot of us just don't have what it takes for the next level, and if it comes out anywhere, it comes out with the putter in your hands. So, hopefully... those are the answers for you. Not to sound too much like excuses. Just what I think happens. I will also add this... on the putting practice green in the little side games we all have going on, EVERYONE on the show can putt. MOOSE

AI - Ease back on Tommy. He made his first cut in his first event in his rookie season, and is off to a decent start for a rookie. He still has an Amazing mountain to climb to keep his card though! The biggest difference here is that in Football, or any of these other sports is you usually know by the first year out of college if you are "Pro" material, and you have a contract (even if Minor leagues) that pays the bills. As a golfer, you can be very close to the big leagues for a very long time and not break through until your 30s and be flat broke the whole time. Many of these players don't make it. Most give up. Some like Justin etc... keep playing on the Mini Tours hoping to break through. What most don't realize is how fine a line it is between the 300 guys with status on the PGA and Nationwide and the next 200-500 guys wanting their jobs toiling away on the mini tours. Every year a new crop of graduates comes along adding to that pot of guys. It makes it interesting, and it shouldn't be any other way. Survival of the fittest, and if you want to make it to the next level, you have to earn it. When any of these players should quit is really up to the individual player. They could break through like Tommy, or Becky on the LPGA... or they could keep toiling like Justin or countless others just a click away. One good week after a monday qualifer and it changes your life forever. You can't exactly do that in the NFL either. MOOSE

Thanks Moose,

That is my plan right now. I plan on entering some local events, Go to qualify in the New York Open, and try some open qualifiers for the nationwide tour. And of course save for Q School.
I will apply for the Big Break as well. (With any luck, I won't need them by that time)

Well, thank you again for your time. I appreciate it.

Steve
