We believe that a lot of tour players are using this 'release'. Mike Austin might be the "father" of this method. I was skeptical at first, not wanting to stray from normal teaching, but now I'm convinced he is on to something. He has proved it time after time with his own ball striking and now I can prove it with my own. It's taken me a while to understand this and now that I do, I'm excited as I can be.
If anyone is interested in discussing this, I'll be happy to share my knowledge. I know a few pitfalls that will prevent you from feeling this and seeing the wonderful results. I won't write any more until I see someone is interested.

Please, don't bother posting any snide remarks. I know a lot of you are +2 handicappers in the phrick department and can screw up a thread in short order. We know who you are, know your motives, and now ask you to kindly just refrain from any negative comments.
thanks

You have my curiosity. What is an 'under' release?

The release (after the ball is long gone) is where the club head stays square and the hands fold the way they are meant to do. The right hand comes into the ball bent back and after the strike, it straightens. Or, you can work with the left hand, it comes into impact straight with the wrist and after impact the club head runs off of its own weight, causing it to fold back. This action instantly DRIVES the left elbow into your side, so you will find it tough to 'chicken wing'.
This lets the club head release looking at the target. This is the way you would underhand toss a ball, or slap something and the way your hands have the most strength. It is wonderful on all shots from the driver down to the putter (especially the putter). Letting the putter head release (always after the hit on the ball) but remaining square to the line and target will get you excited in a hurry.
Your divots will be square at the start and square at the finish. The sound your irons produce will convince you something is going right. I think rolling the club head through impact always gives a kind of 'glancing' blow. Having the club head come in square and SHALLOW, without turning produces the most solid strike possible.

A little more: Here is the way you can get the little mini-feeling right in your house. Take your golf stance and put your right hand out and lightly lean on a short iron that is sticking up from the floor about two foot out from your right foot. Now toss golf balls with your left hand forward toward a target letting your shoulder move down on the way back and then toss the ball forward with your left arm and hand. Notice the natural action your left hand uses to toss the balls. Notice the 'fold back' of the wrist AFTER the ball was tossed. AFTER is a key word here. The release happens after the ball is long gone.

I know what you are getting at and the answer is no, I had the normal 'roll over' of the hands through impact. If I hit one a little fat, it would be skinny in- square- skinny out.
Are you implying that this 'release' is simply a cure for hooks? I'll beg to differ. Five us us single digit handicappers are taking lessons from this pro and this is one of the things we are learning.

Hi RRC:

How do you initiate the downswing? Is this an arm swing or a body swing?

Sorry, my bad. I thought you were implying the teaching pro was simply using this as a personal 'cure' for my swing.
