Tour Talk - Will anyone break Wie's record on the PGA tour?    Back to Topics  Page: 1 of 4

There is one record that Michelle Wie holds on the PGA tour.....not the LPGA tour, but the PGA tour.

The youngest golfer to play in a PGA Tour tournament is Michelle Wie, who was 14 years, 2 months and 29 days of age when she played the 2004 Sony Open in Hawaii.

She was younger than Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods when she first played. So far, Ryo Ishikawa, Tadd Fujikawa, Danny Lee and Rory McIlroy have all failed to beat her record. But with child prodigies getting younger and younger, I'm wondering how long her record will last. Maybe some tournament will give a special invitation to some promising 12 or 13 year old out there, so they can claim to be the first event to help burn out a new talent early.

I would hope that common sense would prevail in the future and that the hype and lies that surrounded Bu88les (and still do), all carefully and precisely organized by her greedy parents, will lead tournament directors to avoid making such a blunder again.

This "record" was bought and paid for - make no mistake about it - and it brought in huge returns to the greedy parents by way of undeserved dozens of sponsors exemptions and endorsements.

I think the record will be broken in the next decade, because child prodigies, greed and over-promotion have not disappeared.

The PGA and LPGA should each have age rules for particpants, pros or amatuers. I'd suggest 17-years of age, and not a day less. And the age rules would be applied to those getting freebies also.

Sounds like a good idea, but there will always be pressure on sponsors of weaker tournaments to increase interest in their event by inviting somebody like the latest child prodigy. And because golf instruction is now starting at age 3 or 4 for some of these kids, it's not inconceivable that some 10 year old or 12 year old amazing player will someday emerge.....and the sponsors will all want to be the first tournament to have him/her.

Also, will anyone break her record for going for the Nelson Bryon on the PGA Tour?

Or how about youngest to ride off the course in a Nike Ambulance?

FTR, she missed the cut by one shot, shooting 72-68, and technically finished T80th.

Incredible for a 14 yr old girl, playing on the premier adult mens golf tour in the world.

Anyone think that Sony got their money's worth by giving Wie a sponsor invite? 6 years ago, and people are still talking about this tournament.

Big picture, people, big picture.

He doesn't understand of the word "Open", like as in the Sony Open.

Somehow "The Sony Open except for those players that are younger than Seventeen" just does not flow out of the mouth.

You're undoubtedly right in what you say... but the tours can and should put in an age limit... Let the kids grow up and not be another circus show...
