Rules - Overview
Mutual of Omaha Drive, Chip & Putt is designed give kids age 7-14 an introduction to the fun and rewarding challenges of competitive golf. No matter your level of experience, there is fun to be had by all involved! Each participant is encouraged to do their best and have a terrific time! Contestants participate in three areas: driving, chipping and putting. Medals will be awarded to the top-five finishers in each skill in each age group (7-8, 9-10, 11-12 and 13-14). Trophies will be presented to the top-three overall finishers in each age group at the local events.Driving
- Each competitor gets two drives
- In order for the drive to be scored, it must come to rest within the 40-yard-wide fairway grids
- The longer of two drives that stays within the fairway grid boundaries will be scored
- Drives landing outside the 40-yard-wide fairway grid will not be counted
- Competitors may choose any club besides his or her putter and may use their own equipment of that which is provided
- For female competitors, two (2) zones will be added to the longest drive
Chipping
- Each participant gets three chips.
- The object of this skill is to hit the ball close to the pin.
- Points are awarded for proximity to the hole.
- A virtual dart board will be created with four concentric circles “pre-marked” on the green with diameters in two-foot increments, approximately 10-18 paces from the pin flag to the chipping area. A point value will be applied to the area around the four circles.
- Point values are as follows: 10 points – chipping the ball in the hole; 5, 4,3,2 and 1 points will be awarded moving away from the hole.
- Participants can earn between 3 and 30 points.
- In the event of a tie, the third (3) chip will count as a tie breaker.
Putting
- Each contestant gets two putts: 5-feet and 15-feet.
- The object of this skill is to make both putts in as few strokes as possible, with a maximum of four strokes per hole.
- As a tie-breaker, the distance from the hole (in inches) after the first putt on the 15-footer will be measured.
Age Requirements
Mutual of Omaha Drive, Chip & Putt is a free event for boys and girls age 7-14. Competitors will be grouped into the following age groups depending on their age on event-day: 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14. No matter when you register for the event, you are grouped based on your age on event day. Regional note: the age-group for which you qualify is the age-group in which you will compete at Regionals.
Scoring
The scoring system is the same at the local, regional and national competitions and is a ranking format declaring the top point earners. The scoring program ranks each participant based on cumulative place finishes during each competition (driving, chipping and putting).
For example, if a competitor has the longest drive in their age group, he or she will have a ranking of one (1). If the same player ranks 10th in chipping and 2nd in putting, that player’s overall ranking score will be 13. Now, all the competitors’ scores will be tabulated based on their combined ranking tally from the three events. The player with the lowest overall ranking scores (best combined finish) – much like scores during a 72-hole golf event – will advance to the regional and/or national championships.
