LA QUINTA, Calif. – We have an interesting withdrawal to report this morning from the Stadium course at PGA West. As today’s final round was about to begin, Palmer flight competitor Dave Davlin had to bow out because of a prior commitment.

As it turns out, Travelin’ Davlin is a professional trick basketball artist who had to catch a flight back to his home town of San Antonio to do a show for 4,000 kids.

The scheduling conflict came at a particularly bad time for Davlin, who came roaring back from a slow start to make the cut in the Palmer flight. His scores of 82-77-77 had him sitting in a tie for 11th place heading into the final round.

In 1990, Dave set a Guinness World record by spinning 12 basketballs on his body at one time.

And you thought golf was a difficult game…

LA QUINTA, Calif. – The 2009 Golf Channel Amateur Tour National Championships has its first ace, and it came from the Senior division in the highest-handicap flight.

Go figure.

Michael Teel, a 28-handicapper from Palm Springs, Calif., holed a 133-yarder at No. 3 at the PGA West Nicklaus tournament course today. The 50-year-old went on to shoot 99, and sits in 31st place heading in to tomorrow’s final round.

LA QUINTA, Calif. – As the 781 participants in this year’s National Championships plod their way through 107-degree temperatures, with each shot becoming more important than the previous, pace of play can certainly become an issue. According to Golf Channel staff, however, the pace has been even better than expected.

Except for one instance…

On the fifth hole at the Nicklaus course this morning, a golf cart and beverage cart hit head-on coming around a blind corner. No one was hurt, but both carts fell out of commission, causing a 20-minute delay.

LA QUINTA, Calif. – The leaderboard for the Championship flight is top-heavy as nine players are within six shots of the lead heading in to Thursday’s third round. Jonathan Bolen, Jacksonville, Fla., sits on a two-shot lead through two rounds after a blistering 67 at The Golf Club at La Quinta. He is 6-under for the championship.

Sitting just three shots back is defending National Champion Jeff Hunter, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.

It's moving day here at La Quinta, and the scene shifts to the difficult Stadium course for the third round. Let's see who wants that National Championship title the most.

1Birthday hole-in-one

LA QUINTA, Calif. – When Chris Stavinoha arrived in Southern California this weekend from his home in The Woodlands, Tex., he was hoping to enjoy a good practice session before beginning his National Championship week. What made it even better was that Sunday was his birthday. For an avid golfer, what could be better than a relaxing 18 holes at one of the nation’s premiere golf destinations on your birthday?

Well, how about a hole in one? And this wasn’t just any hole in one. Ironically, Stavinoha’s ace came on the fourth hole, and on his 44th birthday.

“I was in disbelief,” Stavinoha said of his first-ever ace. “The hole was cut on a ridge, so I couldn’t really tell if it was in or not, but the guys in my group said, ‘That ball’s in the hole!’”

On Tuesday Stavinoha returned to the 170-yarder during his tournament round and made par. “I guess that hole just fits my eye or something.”

No tournament ace, but nonetheless one of the rarer hole-in-one stories you’ll ever hear.

0"It's a dry heat"

LA QUINTA, Calif. – Today marks the official first day of Autumn, but summer’s still cranking in La Quinta, site of this week’s Golf Channel Amateur Tour (GCAT) National Championships. High temperatures in the range of 106 degrees are forecast all week, which isn’t abnormal even in late September.

The cliché is that “it’s a dry heat” which may sound sarcastic to some, but it’s actually a decent reprieve for those used to more humid climates. Just how big of a difference depends on who you ask, but one thing is for sure, it’s a lot cooler in the shade when the humidity is only 10 percent. Finding abundant tree cover in the desert, however, is easier said than done.
