Behind the Scenes: Eating Your Own

Editor's Note: If you want more of an inside look into season four, tune-in every Wednesday for our new Big Break IV All-Access show.
The day was finally here. And Team Europe was none too happy about it. They had been talking about the possibility of having to cannibalize their own team for a couple of days now. Thomas was amazed that The Golf Channel would even consider doing that. But the rest of the contestants knew it was the only way and were expecting it sooner or later. Today was the day.
Today, T.J. and Paul would get a break from competition.
Team Europe kicked off the morning fighting for immunity and testing their putting skills. Each contestant would putt out from four locations. While no one had any major problems with this challenge, Guy pulled out the victory by sinking three of his four shots in one putt.
The next challenge, the elimination challenge, would prove more difficult. And the competition would prove to be even tougher. The mood had turned serious quickly. This time the contestants would choose their weapon and choose their shots.
Thomas picked the first shot, a flop shot. Warren selected a 100-yard shot in the rough. And Marty picked a 160-yard shot in the fairway. After two locations Marty had made two fantastic putts to take an early lead. And after the third shot he was declared the leader and safe from elimination. Thomas and Warren, however, would face off in a 4th shot. A pitch and run from the front of the green.
Thomas, however, was one shot ahead of Warren from the three shots prior. So, the pressure was on for Warren to make his first shot. Thomas went first and put it to within a couple of feet, which really solidified Warren’s need to make it on the first shot. Talk about a nail biter. Warren’s shot was heading straight for the hole and actually rolled around the lip and bounced out – making it very difficult for everyone on the crew to keep quiet. Thomas sank his second putt and Warren didn’t even have to bother finishing. He would be going home.
That night we all compared our iPods and talked about music. I hate to admit it, but I will say we kind of beat T.J. up a bit for his fondness of country music, but it was all in good fun.
After dinner we went into the small town of Carnoustie to a pub. Surprisingly, this was one of the few pubs that the crew had not yet frequented. However, I saw many familiar faces of townspeople I had met throughout the stay. Carnoustie was indeed a small town.
The cameras shot the guys for awhile. Chatting it up with the Dewar’s girls and having a drink. In honesty, few of the contestants actually drank liquor during the shoot. Most of them were in hard core training and stayed with water or fruit juice.
After the cameras were turned off, however, the real party began. Our PR Director and I challenged T.J. and Marty to a rousing game of darts. And I still firmly believe had it not been for my partner – or T.J.’s uncanny skill for darts - we would’ve won. But in the end, Marty sealed their victory with a double bullseye.
Around 10:00 p.m. the guys were growing restless, though, and were anxious to get back to the hotel and to bed. I escorted them back with one of our Production Crew members because I was anxious to get to bed as well. However, when we returned, Thomas found his way to the bar and to one of the cute girls in it. Finally around 11:30 I forced him to go to bed so that I could turn in as well. I was exhausted and knew in the morning he would thank me. He would need his rest. And saying goodbye to the girl in the bar was easy. Tomorrow Team Europe would say goodbye to one more teammate. And that would be much more difficult.
