Ask Adrienne Gautreaux about her chances of one day playing on the LPGA, and without hesitation she will tell you they are good. After all, in college she beat current LPGA players, and she feels she should be able to do it again.

The thought process doesn’t come from arrogance; rather it is fueled by a competitive streak as long as a 600-yard par-five hole. It’s the same desire that has Gautreaux and her husband racing to see who can first open the hymnal books to the correct hymn in church.

Accented by a Texas drawl and fiery red hair, Gautreaux’s fire is backed up with a solid game that was good enough to earn a spot in the finals of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament in 2005 and ’06, where she fell short by one stroke each time.

“To be that close was so frustrating,” Gautreaux said. “It was hard to go back and play on the FUTURES Tour when I was that close to playing on the LPGA.”

Former Big Break contestant and University of South Carolina teammate Kristy McPherson has seen Gautreaux’s game progress and says it is only matter of time for her competitive friend.

“She is a fireball and, besides myself, is the biggest competitor I have ever met,” said McPherson. “She can take it low, and to be small, she can really move it out there.”

Gautreaux’s successful collegiate career began at Sam Houston State, where she experienced success but only stayed in Huntsville one year because she said her “coach was a jerk.”

At the University of South Carolina, though, she had “a blast”. While playing on a team that won the Southeastern Conference Championship, Gautreaux earned a degree in Experimental Psychology, and then started working toward a Masters degree in Hotel Management.

“Sometimes I wish I would’ve stayed in school and finished my Masters degree, but I wanted to get out and play,” said Gautreaux, who won the Dinah Shore Trophy in 2004, which is awarded by the Ladies Professional Golf Foundation to recognize a female collegiate golfer who excels in both academics and athletics.

But it cost money to compete, and she is paying the price. To fund her career, Guatreaux has become a bit of a “handyman” doing painting jobs as well as teaching karate and working with a children’s shelter for kids of domestic violence.

The work is rewarding but not her calling. Guatreax’s passion is golf, and she has the inner fire to not only win Big Break Ka’anapali but also burn bright on the LPGA Tour.
