Bio Update: Since leaving The Big Break V: Hawaii, Kim was named the head women's golf coach for East Carolina University. She also has competed in a limited number of tournaments on the Duramed FUTURES Tour this past season, missing four cuts in the four events in which she played. In addition, Kim appeared on the GOLF CHANNEL’s Golf With Style: Global Challenge.
The Big Break V Bio: It was bribery that got an 11-year-old Kim to the golf course for the first time. Her father’s promises of hot dogs and other treats held her interest until she could really appreciate the game. Then at age 14, she fell in love with the game and swung a club every day since. Although Kim won the North Carolina State girls championship in consecutive years, she played in relatively few national junior tournaments, never thinking big enough to go beyond her state borders too often. While in high school, she earned All-Conference honors while playing on the boys’ team and was recruited by many colleges far and wide. She decided to stay close and attend the University of North Carolina. Kim later discovered that her protective and proud father was hiding many of her recruitment letters because he wanted to keep her close and have the chance to attend all her college tournaments. She loved the entire college experience and performed well in golf, earning Division I All-American honors. After graduation, she entered the LPGA Tour Qualifying Tournament with no success.
She tried the Ladies European Tour version of Q-School and played well enough to be low American. Her husband took some time off from his studies to be an Episcopal minister to caddy for Kim while she played on the European Tour with the likes of Laura Davies, Karrie Webb and Annika Sorenstam. But she did not enjoy their same success. When the Lewellens returned to the U.S., she played the Duramed FUTURES Tour and won in her second year. Yet, another, relocation found the couple in Charleston, S.C., where Kim took a job coaching the men’s and women’s golf teams at The Citadel. Being a mom and coaching was fulfilling enough, but she missed the competition. She found herself hitting balls in her backyard when her two children napped.
The Big Break V Results: The only BBV competitor to participate in every elimination challenge, Kim's run was brought to an end in episode 11.
